Director of Development

Cassandra Burney Walter

Cassandra Burney Walter began her career in dance in the early 1970s with the Mississippi Ballet Theatre (MBT) under the direction of JoBee Best. Prior to coming to Mississippi, JoBee had been teaching and training dancers in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles for many years. In addition to her classical ballet training, JoBee had also studied jazz technique under Luigi himself. As a company member of the MBT, Cassandra studied classical ballet, modern dance and Luigi jazz technique as part of the required curriculum. She received further training at Juilliard School and The School of American Ballet. After leaving New York City, she danced at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1981.

Cassandra's training in Luigi technique made it possible for her to continue dancing after obtaining a law degree from Ole Miss in 1988. She was a member of “Simply Jazz” and the “Keri Amis Dancers” who performed for many private fundraising events.

While building a successful career in law, Cassandra’s passion for dance did not diminish. She became a ballroom dancer in 2011, under the tutelage of the late John T. Murphy, formerly a Dance Director for the Authur Murray Organization.

In 2023, Cassandra founded “Ballroom Mississippi, LLC”, Mississippi’s first ballroom dance school whose mission is to make ballroom dance accessible to all ages and in all communities throughout Mississippi regardless of location or socioeconomic status.

Costume Manager/designer

Lillian Minnery Rolfe, though born in Jackson MS, was raised in the Albany and Saratoga region of New York. Her first costumes were made for her Siamese cat and her dolls and sewing tiny quilts and other items for her dollhouse. While at the State University of New York at New Paltz she took her first ballet class, something she‘d always wanted to do. While there she studied drawing, metal working and jewelry, art history and anthropology. After her marriage to Ryan, then a sailor with the USN, she took up quilting as a way to fill the days and months he was deployed. As their children grew she added Halloween and Cosplay costumes to her sewing résumé along with bag making. Ryan‘s retirement from the Navy led them back to Mississippi, and that‘s when Lilly found Ballet Mississippi‘s adult classes.

Being on stage as a party parent for the first time was truly a life changing experience. Working in the costume department combines her love of ballet, design, color and garment construction. Lilly is a member of the Craftsman‘s Guild of Mississippi and has past work experience as an apprentice jeweler at deJonghe Jewelery, numerous quilting commissions and has attended Tutu School, an intensive workshop for ballet costumers.

She and her husband live in Madison with their three children, Cecily, Emmett and Joseph.
